Vigo County sheriff’s department reported 90 violent crimes in 2018. This number was up from 61 reported in 2017.

The breakdown of violent crimes for 2018 included 2 murders, 9 rapes, 8 robbery, 71 assaults.

Property crimes also experienced a jump over the previous year. 906 total property crimes for 2018 vs 879 the previous. Burglary was up 37, but theft decreased 24.

A one year change in crime does not reflect a overall trend, but agencies often change methods of reporting which make the Uniform Crime Reporting not so uniform when comparing longer trends.

Examples of this are no data was submitted for 2016 for Vigo County.

Terre Haute hasn’t submitted its data for 2017 or 2018. The UCR has to then use estimates for reporting Crime Rates for the State. Reporting is voluntary and left to the individual agency to disclose this information to FBI and public at large.

Indiana statewide had a decrease in violent crime rate in 2017 from 399 per 100,000 people down to 382 per 100,000. Property crime rate also decreased from 2416.9 per 100,000 in 2017 to 2179.3 per 100,000 for 2018.

  1. CRIME rates over a one year period indicate nothing. Crime in Terre Haute is at an all time low. Duke Bennett said so. The FBI is wrong
